         It's mid-April: that means college acceptance letters have been received, scholarships have been granted, and students are buying microwaves and sheet sets in ridiculous shades of yellow (or some other outrageous color) in support of their chosen university. While it is hard for me to see all my graduating friends move on, I can't help but get excited at the prospect that, in less than one year, I will be buying the same, absurdly-colored hoodies and preparing for college as well. I am unsure of what my desired major will be, but I am sure of one thing: I want to attend The University of the South.  Not only is it a very prestigious and distinguished school, but the university sits on a beautiful campus and it is very close to home, where, unlike most people, I want to stay. The campus is only about a twenty minute drive from my house, which I like. When you are preparing to apply for college, you should make a list of what you are looking for in a school. Personally, I want a school that is close to home, diverse in both majors and people, and a place where I can see myself for four or more years. Here are some more things you should keep in mind when picking a university:

1)       Academics: This should be the most important factor when choosing a college. Choose schools that offer programs that you are interested in.

2)       Size and Location: When choosing a university, be sure that you look into the number of students enrolled. Also, if the school you want to go to is out of state, be sure to visit before you commit.  No amount of pictures and virtual tours can really do a campus justice.

3)       Student Life: Check into the quality and size of the dorms and the types of clubs and organizations you could join.  Be sure that you can see yourself finding a place at the university of your choice.

4)       Food: Eat the food before you enroll! If the food sucks, what are you going to do for four years?? Make sure it is something you can live with, or be sure to find alternatives.
